We're a vertical SaaS in contract lifecycle management where our help docs rank #1 organically for 'how to [approval workflow] in [our platform]' queries, but Perplexity consistently cites Docusign and Ironclad instead. We have schema.org/HowTo + dateModified markup, confirmed 3x weekly crawls, and even tested schema.org/VideoObject—nothing shifted. Before we rebuild content, what's the diagnostic process to determine if this is (A) schema parsing failure, (B) deliberate deprioritization for neutrality, or (C) training data recency where we weren't in Perplexity's curated set despite current crawlability?

Asked by Jake M.
Test schema parsing by temporarily moving your HowTo markup to a subdomain Perplexity hasn't crawled; if it still cites competitors, it's not parsing. Then cross-reference Perplexity's citations against their public training data cutoff—if competitors' docs predate your content, it's training bias. The fastest diagnostic: check if Perplexity cites you in *any* answer engine (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini); if only one or two do, it's likely training data recency, not schema markup.
