7 Proven Tactics to Improve Your Brand's Visibility in AI Search Engines (2026 Benchmarks)

AI search visibility is no longer just about whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity mentions your brand. The real question is whether these systems recommend your business for the commercial questions that matter to your customers.

Traditional SEO metrics cannot answer that question on their own. A page can rank in Google without appearing in AI-generated answers, while a brand with a relatively small website can become a source for relevant AI recommendations.

Research published by RankCaster AI in 2026 provides practical insights into what may help brands improve their visibility. One study examined 8,058 observations across four businesses over six weeks, analyzing the relationship between owned content, external signals, citation frequency, and brand mentions. Another analyzed 5.22 million AI citation records from 44 organizations to investigate why some pages remain cited over time while others experience short-lived spikes.

Read the original research:

The findings point to seven practical tactics: measure visibility at the prompt level, create content around specific customer questions, combine owned content with external signals, build relevant third-party presence, optimize for persistent citations, monitor competitors, and measure the results systematically.

What the Research Says: 2026 Benchmarks

Before changing your strategy, establish a baseline. The following figures come from RankCaster AI's observational research. They are useful benchmarks for planning and diagnosis, not universal predictions of what every brand will achieve.

Finding Observed result Practical implication
No owned or external signals in the studied observations 0.5% brand mention rate Brands with little relevant presence may rarely appear in AI answers.
Owned content only 35% mention rate A brand's own website can provide an important foundation.
External signals only Approximately 40% mention rate Third-party presence can contribute to brand visibility.
Owned content combined with external signals 58% mention rate The strongest result in this study came from combining both.
6-20 citations per week 50% mention rate Citation frequency was associated with a higher likelihood of being mentioned.
21 or more citations per week 61% mention rate More citations were associated with further gains, although volume alone does not guarantee persistence.
URLs cited by six AI providers 36.8% classified as persistent Presence across multiple AI providers was associated with greater citation persistence.

Sources: RankCaster AI's study of 8,058 observations and its study of 5.22 million citations.

The first study covered four projects over six weeks. The second analyzed citation histories for 14,152 URLs across 44 organizations. Neither establishes that a particular action will produce the same result for every business.

1. Measure Brand Visibility at the Prompt Level

The first step is to identify the questions for which AI systems already recommend your brand-and the commercially important questions for which they do not.

Tracking whether your domain appears in AI citations is useful, but it does not tell the whole story. An AI system can cite your website without mentioning your brand in its recommendation. It can also recommend your company without citing the page you expected it to use.

These are different outcomes and should be measured separately.

Start by building a list of prompts that reflect how potential customers discover, compare, and select products or services.

For a B2B software company, the list might include:

  • What are the best AI visibility platforms?
  • Which tools help agencies improve brand visibility in ChatGPT?
  • What is the best alternative to [competitor]?
  • Which platform tracks AI referral traffic?
  • How can a company increase its chances of being recommended by AI?

Include category questions, comparisons, alternatives, problem-specific questions, and prompts with clear commercial intent.

Run the same prompts repeatedly across the AI systems relevant to your market. A single response is not a reliable baseline because answers and cited sources can vary between runs.

What to Measure

Metric What it tells you
Brand mention rate How often the brand appears in responses to your target prompts.
Recommendation rate How often the brand is presented as an option or recommendation.
Citation rate How often a particular page or domain is cited as a source.
Competitor presence Which competitors appear in the same answers.
AI referral traffic How much website traffic arrives from AI platforms.
Conversions from AI traffic Whether that traffic generates leads, sign-ups, or revenue.

Do not treat these metrics as interchangeable. More citations do not necessarily mean more recommendations, and more recommendations do not automatically translate into more customers.

RankCaster AI's AV-Index 2026 study of 50 U.S. SEO and digital marketing agencies illustrates a structured approach to measurement. The study evaluated agencies across ChatGPT and Gemini using five prompts and ten runs per assistant.

Action: Establish a baseline for your most important prompts before changing your content or external visibility strategy. This will help you identify actual gaps rather than relying on a single AI answer or a general visibility score.

2. Create Content That Directly Answers Commercial Questions

Publishing more articles is not necessarily the best way to improve AI visibility. The more important question is whether your content answers the questions for which you want your brand to be recommended.

RankCaster AI's six-week study illustrates why prompt relevance matters.

For an education center in Poland, the mention rate for the prompt “SMM courses in Europe” reached 50% when the brand received 12 citations and 67% at 18 citations. For another prompt, “SEO courses,” the mention rate fell to zero after citations stopped.

These are observations from one project, not a universal formula. However, they demonstrate an important practical distinction: visibility for one topic does not guarantee visibility for another.

The examples and methodology are documented in How to Increase Brand Mentions in AI: RankCaster AI Data from 8,058 Observations.

How to Improve Content Relevance

Start with the question, not the keyword.

If you want AI systems to recommend your business for a specific problem, publish a page that directly addresses that problem.

For example, a page targeting “AI visibility platform for SEO agencies” should explain:

  • What the platform does.
  • Which agency workflows it supports.
  • How it differs from alternatives.
  • Which use cases it is suited for.
  • What measurable outcomes it can help track.
  • What limitations or prerequisites potential customers should understand.

A generic article about the future of AI search is unlikely to answer all these questions.

Use a clear structure.

Organize pages around the questions customers actually ask. Use descriptive headings, direct answers, concrete examples, and verifiable claims.

Make the brand's role explicit.

Explain what your company does, who it serves, which problems it solves, and how its offering differs from competing solutions. Avoid vague descriptions that could apply to almost any business.

Connect related content.

A page about AI visibility measurement can link to relevant material about AI referral traffic, prompt research, competitor analysis, and content optimization. These connections help readers navigate the subject and provide clearer context about your expertise.

Action: Map your highest-priority prompts to existing pages. Improve pages that already address the relevant questions, and create new ones only where a meaningful content gap exists.

3. Combine Owned Content With External Signals

One of the clearest findings in RankCaster AI's research is the difference between relying on a brand's own content and combining it with relevant external sources.

Across 8,058 observations, the study reported the following results:

Signal combination Observations Brand mention rate
No signals 3,277 0.5%
Owned content only 1,925 35%
External signals only 2,905 40%
Owned content and external signals 851 58%

The combined group had the highest mention rate in the study.

These figures are observational. They do not prove that adding external mentions to any particular website will increase its mention rate from 35% to 58%. The groups may differ in other ways, including brand strength, content quality, and market competition.

Nevertheless, the results support a practical strategy: build useful content on your own website while developing a consistent presence in relevant third-party sources.

The complete breakdown and research methodology are available in RankCaster AI's original 8,058-observation study.

What This Means in Practice

Your website should explain your offering and provide reliable information about your business. External sources can provide additional context about your brand, its products, and its place in the market.

A practical approach includes:

  • Publishing useful, specific content on your own domain.
  • Keeping product and service descriptions consistent across channels.
  • Contributing relevant expertise to industry publications.
  • Maintaining accurate professional profiles.
  • Publishing useful material on appropriate social platforms.
  • Participating in legitimate industry discussions.
  • Ensuring that external descriptions of your business reflect what you actually offer.

Do not interpret this as a recommendation to generate as many mentions as possible. Irrelevant mentions can create noise rather than useful context. The objective is to make your brand consistently discoverable in sources that are relevant to your category and audience.

Action: Audit your owned content and external presence together. Identify important topics where your website provides a good answer but your brand has little relevant third-party presence-or where external profiles describe your business inconsistently.

4. Build Relevant Third-Party Presence

External signals can come from different kinds of sources, including professional directories, industry publications, social platforms, partners, and other businesses.

RankCaster AI's research recorded 664 cross-brand citations for one Israeli business and 698 for another. These were among the largest individual external-source contributions observed in the study.

The same research also recorded citations from Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, with approximately 100-120 citations per brand during the observation period. Individual directory sources-including Yelp, Clutch, G2, Alignable, and SourceForge-generated between one and nine citations each.

These figures come from a study of four projects. They should not be interpreted as a universal ranking of platforms or a guarantee that a particular directory will improve AI visibility. The original source breakdown is available in How to Increase Brand Mentions in AI.

The useful insight is that a brand's external presence can extend beyond its own website, and different sources can contribute in different ways.

Prioritize Sources That Make Sense for Your Market

Professional directories

Choose directories that customers actually use to evaluate providers in your category. Complete your profile accurately, including services, location, specialization, and other relevant details.

Industry publications

Contribute original research, practical expertise, or useful commentary to publications that cover your market. A substantive contribution is more valuable than a superficial mention created solely to insert a brand name.

Partners and clients

Where a genuine business relationship exists, look for opportunities to explain the work, product, or collaboration. Case studies and partner pages can provide useful context when they accurately describe the relationship.

Social platforms

Keep your profiles consistent and publish material that demonstrates your expertise. Include specific information about your products and services rather than relying exclusively on general promotional messages.

Independent reviews and comparisons

Encourage genuine customer feedback and ensure that your company information is accurate on relevant platforms. Do not fabricate reviews or attempt to manufacture independent endorsements.

Avoid the Volume Trap

More external mentions do not automatically mean more useful visibility. A handful of relevant, detailed sources may be more valuable than a large number of unrelated references.

Action: Build a list of relevant external sources by industry, geography, and customer intent. Prioritize accuracy, relevance, and genuine expertise rather than pursuing a fixed number of mentions.

5. Optimize for Persistent Citations, Not Just Citation Volume

A page can receive a large number of AI citations and still lose visibility quickly.

RankCaster AI's research into 5.22 million citation records examined the citation histories of 14,152 URLs from 44 organizations across six AI providers.

The study classified the URLs into four citation-lifecycle groups:

Citation lifecycle Share of analyzed URLs Average citations Average observed lifetime
Persistent 3% 41 139 days
Spike 20% 723 83 days
Gradual decay 32% 197 70 days
Emerging 45% 176 18 days

Figures are averages within the study's classifications. The groups represent different observed citation histories and should not be treated as guaranteed future outcomes.

The contrast is important: pages classified as experiencing a citation spike received an average of 723 citations, compared with 41 for persistent pages. Yet persistent pages had a longer observed citation lifetime.

In other words, a large initial burst of citations was not the same as sustained visibility.

The full methodology, lifecycle definitions, and limitations are documented in What Makes a Page Persistently Cited by AI: A Study Based on 5.22 Million Citations.

What Helps a Page Remain Useful Over Time?

Cover the subject in a way that matches real user needs.

A page should answer its primary question clearly and provide enough related information to remain useful across relevant variations of that question. This does not mean making every article longer. It means covering the aspects of the subject that readers need to understand.

Maintain factual accuracy.

Review pricing, product capabilities, dates, statistics, examples, and other claims that can become outdated. Remove information that is no longer correct.

Make important information easy to find.

Use descriptive headings, clear definitions, concise explanations, and accessible page content. Do not bury the key answer under lengthy introductory material.

Build presence across relevant AI systems.

In the RankCaster AI dataset, no URL cited by only one AI provider was classified as persistent. The share of persistent URLs rose to 36.8% among URLs cited by all six providers.

This is an association within the study, not proof that expanding the number of providers citing a page will cause it to become persistent. The original research explains the study's definitions and limitations.

Action: Review your most frequently cited pages and determine whether their visibility persists over time. Prioritize maintaining pages that continue to answer commercially important questions, rather than optimizing solely for a temporary increase in citations.

6. Monitor Competitors and Respond to Changes in AI Recommendations

AI visibility is competitive. A brand can continue receiving citations while appearing less often in AI-generated recommendations.

In one RankCaster AI project, a prompt initially produced a 100% mention rate for the brand. Six weeks later, the rate had fallen to 43%, even though the brand's citations remained at approximately 10-17 per week.

The researchers suggested increased competitor visibility as a possible explanation. The observation did not establish that this was the cause.

The distinction matters: when your brand's mention rate falls, the first step should be to investigate what changed-not immediately publish more content.

The example is documented in How to Increase Brand Mentions in AI: RankCaster AI Data from 8,058 Observations.

Diagnose the Decline

1. Repeat the same prompts.

Use the same wording and measurement method as in your baseline. Otherwise, you may mistake changes in the test for changes in visibility.

2. Identify which competitors are appearing more often.

Check whether new brands have entered the answers, whether existing competitors are receiving stronger recommendations, or whether the types of companies being recommended have changed.

3. Inspect the sources cited in the responses.

Determine whether the AI system is using new articles, comparison pages, directories, reviews, or other sources.

4. Compare the competing content.

Look for information that your pages lack: clearer service descriptions, stronger evidence, more specific answers, useful comparisons, or more current information.

5. Update your response to the gap.

Improve the relevant page or develop a missing resource. Where appropriate, strengthen your brand's presence in the external sources that matter to the topic.

Do Not Assume That Traditional Search Rankings Explain AI Visibility

A separate RankCaster AI study examined the overlap between traditional search results and AI citations across four B2B queries. For two tool-selection queries, it found only four matching URLs among 120 Google and Bing top-10 positions and the stable AI citations it compared-3.3% in that particular sample.

The study covered a narrow category and a single measurement date, so the result cannot be generalized to every industry or query. It does, however, illustrate why strong conventional search rankings should not be treated as proof that the same pages will be cited by AI systems.

Read the full methodology and findings in Source Overlap Between Search Engines and AI Recommendations.

Action: When visibility declines, compare your current AI responses, cited sources, and competitors before deciding which content or external signals to change.

7. Measure the Impact of Your Changes

AI visibility work should be treated as an ongoing optimization process, not a sequence of publishing tasks.

If you publish an article, update a service page, or strengthen your presence on third-party sites, you need a consistent method for determining what changed afterward.

RankCaster AI's AV-Index 2026 study of U.S. SEO and digital marketing agencies provides an example of structured measurement. It evaluated 50 agencies across ChatGPT and Gemini using five prompts and ten runs per assistant.

Repeated runs help distinguish recurring patterns from individual responses, although a limited number of runs still leaves uncertainty.

Build a Repeatable Measurement Process

Step 1: Establish a baseline.

Record the brand mention rate, recommendation rate, citation rate, and relevant competitors for a fixed set of prompts.

Step 2: Document the intervention.

Record exactly what changed: a new article, an updated service page, a corrected business profile, a new independent publication, or another specific action.

Step 3: Repeat the same tests.

Use the same prompts and AI systems, and repeat the measurements. Where possible, retain the individual results rather than recording only a single aggregate score.

Step 4: Separate the outcomes.

Determine whether the change affected:

  • Brand mentions.
  • Actual recommendations.
  • Citations to owned pages.
  • Citations to third-party sources.
  • AI referral traffic.
  • Leads or conversions.

An increase in citations may be a useful intermediate result, but it does not automatically demonstrate business impact.

Step 5: Compare the results with the baseline.

Look for consistent changes across repeated measurements. Account for other factors that may have changed during the same period, including competitor activity, page updates, and differences between AI providers.

Step 6: Continue, revise, or stop.

Invest more in actions that produce meaningful improvements. Revise tactics that show no clear effect, and avoid treating a coincidental change as proof that an intervention worked.

Connect AI Visibility to Business Outcomes

A brand can become more visible in AI responses without generating more traffic or sales. Conversely, a small amount of highly relevant AI referral traffic may produce valuable leads.

Where technically possible, use analytics to identify referrals from AI platforms, then connect those visits to meaningful conversion events.

This helps distinguish three different objectives:

  1. Visibility: Does AI mention or recommend the brand?
  2. Acquisition: Does that visibility bring relevant visitors to the website?
  3. Business impact: Do those visitors become leads, customers, or revenue?

Each objective requires its own metric.

Action: Maintain a record of prompts, responses, citations, content changes, and referral outcomes. Use that record to decide what to do next instead of relying on a single visibility score.

Conclusion: Build AI Visibility Through Evidence, Not Guesswork

RankCaster AI's research provides a practical starting point for improving brand visibility in AI search engines.

Across 8,058 observations from four projects, the highest mention rate-58%-was observed when owned content and external signals were combined. In a separate dataset of 5.22 million citation records, pages with persistent citation histories received fewer citations on average than pages experiencing short-lived spikes.

A third study, Source Overlap Between Search Engines and AI Recommendations, found minimal overlap between traditional search results and stable AI citations for the specific B2B queries it examined. This reinforces the importance of measuring AI visibility directly rather than assuming that conventional search rankings tell the whole story.

Together, these findings point to a strategy built around relevance, consistency, and measurement.

To improve your brand's visibility in AI:

  1. Measure brand mentions and recommendations for commercially important prompts.
  2. Create content that directly answers the questions your customers ask.
  3. Combine useful owned content with relevant external signals.
  4. Build a credible presence in third-party sources that matter to your market.
  5. Optimize for sustained usefulness rather than short-lived citation volume.
  6. Monitor competitor activity and investigate declines in visibility.
  7. Measure the effects of changes and connect visibility to traffic and conversions.

The evidence does not establish a universal formula for getting recommended by AI. The studies cover specific samples, and their findings need further validation across industries and markets.

But they offer a useful way to move beyond passive monitoring.

Instead of asking only whether AI mentions your brand, identify the questions where you want to be recommended, determine what is missing from your current presence, take targeted action, and measure what changes.
