When we search 'best premium pet food brands' in Perplexity, we see citations from Pet Food Industry Magazine and VCA Animal Hospitals, but our brand never appears. How do we get listed in the third-party sources that AI engines actually pull from?

Perplexity and similar engines crawl a curated set of publishers, industry directories, and vetted sources—not your website directly. You need to appear in publications and platforms those engines already index and trust.
Start by mapping which sources show up in answers about your category. Search competitor names and premium pet food topics in Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini, then note the domains cited most often. You'll usually see trade publications, veterinary associations, retailer guides, and review aggregators.
Next, pursue earned placements: pitch your brand story or a unique data point (e.g., sourcing practices, nutritional research) to the trade press and vertical publications you identified. These typically have lower barriers than mainstream media. Industry directories and membership organizations also matter—VCA, AAFCO resources, and pet health platforms often get indexed heavily.
Third, audit your own site for structured data. Use schema.org/Product, schema.org/Organization, and schema.org/Article markup so crawlers understand what you offer. Perplexity's crawler respects robots.txt selectively, but clean schema helps it extract your brand correctly when it does visit.
To measure progress: re-run the same searches in 4–6 weeks. If you land a feature in one of those indexed publications, check whether Perplexity cites it in new answers. If your brand data appears but is outdated or wrong, note the source—that tells you where to correct the record.
